Welcome to District 47 Vancouver Island

Welcome to the District 47 (Vancouver Island) Website

The Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO) has nearly 75,000 members, who belong to one of 48 geographical districts. There are two districts that have been established to serve those who live in British Columbia: District 42 (BC Mainland), with approximately 300 members, and District 47 (Vancouver Island), with more than 420 members.
Although the members of District 47 come from all parts of Ontario, as well as Alberta and British Columbia, we share a common background of having had a career with a school board or educational institution in Canada. Because of the large geographical area of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, District 47 has two units: the Victoria Unit's members live in the Greater Victoria area, communities south of the Malahat, and the southern Gulf Islands; the Mid/Upper Island Unit serves the needs of those who live north of the Malahat, and the Gulf Islands from north of Salt Spring Island.

Our Tenth Anniversary

On November 8, 2006, a group of District 42 members resident on Vancouver Island met to discuss the creation of a separate Vancouver Island RTO District. They elected an Interim President John Manuel, with Doreen Hall as VP, Margot Lods as Treasurer and Darrell Grande as Secretary. On April 30, 2007, the District held its first Annual General Meeting at which Bill Sheppard was elected as President, with Doreen Hall as VP, Darrell Grande as Secretary and Margot Lods as Treasurer. Over the ten years since that first AGM Doreen, Darrell and Margot have done long-term service on the Executive with Doreen serving a term as President, and Mid/Upper Island representative, Darrell as three term Treasurer and a term as President and Margot five terms as Treasurer. Barbra Strachan, Gloria Humphrey have served as Presidents.
This year, I moved into the Presidency with Debbie Walker as Vice President and June Farmer as Secretary and Rex Sharman serving his third term as Treasurer. We attempt to keep in touch with our members through a variety of ways: this web site has contact and other important information for your interest; twice a year, our District Newsletter, with articles and notices of social events, is sent to our members and is posted on the web site; from time to time, our communications volunteers will remind the membership of upcoming social events, either by e-mail or phone. We also encourage our members to become involved in the "life" of our district and units. The Social Committees in the units plan various events throughout the year. The Unit and District Executives meet 3-4 times a year, to discuss and plan ways to serve our members. Should anyone wish to attend one of these meetings, they're encouraged to contact an Executive member.
